Full image caption

This watercolour shows the city skyline, as seen from Battersea, looking north across ploughed fields in the foreground. Visible landmarks in the distance include Chelsea Hospital and Westminster Abbey.
The painting is signed 'R. Westall' and dated 1848, making an attribution to the topographical artist Robert Westall likely. Westall was born into an artistic family, as both his father, William, and uncle, Richard, were notable painters.
In 1849 Robert Westall exhibited a painting at the Royal Academy entitled 'London from Pavilion Place, Battersea Fields', which could possibly be this painting in the Museum's collection.
