Many Londoners would travel to Kent in September to work harvesting the hops. Farmers would write to out of work or lowly paid Londoners asking them to come and work on the harvest. Train tickets would be provided and many families went back year after year viewing their time in Kent as a holiday. Once collected the hops were measured into large sacks called ‘pokes’ as can be seen in this photograph, and then they were taken to an Oast house to be dried.
