William Wynne Ryland was an engraver to George III and Queen Charlotte. He ran several print selling businesses on Cornhill and the Strand. A talented engraver, Ryland was accused of forging bank exchange bills which were drawn against the East India Company. He went into hiding in Stepney where he was tracked down by the authorities. After a failed suicide attempt, Ryland was convicted at the Old Bailey and executed at Tyburn in August 1783. It remains unclear whether Ryland was actually guilty, but his flight to Stepney sealed his conviction.
