Full image caption

Roman sword scabbard mount. Copper-alloy decorative mount from the front face of a sword scabbard. The mount is an inverted amphora-shape with vestigial scrolls and the surface is divided into sections on which traces of tin as an alternate colouring to the copper alloy can be seen. Each section is divided by a groove into which black niello is set, traces of which survive. The mount is slightly curved in section but the neck is flat-backed to rest against the leather scabbard. The vestigial scrolls protrude from the neck dividing into two and splitting into two further coils, one of which is missing on one side.
