Full image caption

In the early nineteenth century, this market situated at the
south-west corner of Lincoln’s Inn Fields, sold meat, fish and
fresh vegetables. There were many taverns in the vicinity.
Joe Grimaldi, the famous clown, was born in Stanhope Street adjoining the market. Dickens alluded to the area as a place that had ‘houses of a poor description, swarming with inhabitants’. This ‘rookery’ or slum quarter was swept away at the start of the twentieth century forming part of the Aldwych and Kingsway improvement scheme.
