Full image caption

Circular, glass fronted brooch containing a black and white portrait of Major-General Robert Baden-Powell attached to a red, white and blue enamel bow pin. The brooch was issued to commemorate Baden-Powell's role in the raising of the siege of the town of Mafeking during the Second Anglo-Boer war. British victory at Mafeking in May 1900 elevated Baden-Powell to the status of national hero. A range of brooches and badges depicting Boer war heroes became popular souvenirs during the second Anglo-Boer war and could be purchased from street sellers & retail outlets.
