This image shows a box containing cutlery made of wood and iron from old London Bridge, c.1831.
When the materials of old London Bridge were being sold, the London cutler John Weiss bought some fifteen tonnes of iron. This iron came from the tips of the bridge's wooden piles. Weiss found that it produced very fine steel. He maintained that the iron, after 700 years, had been 'subjected to galvanic action'. The knives form part of a large canteen of cutlery made for the banker Nathan Meyer Rothschild and are marked with his initials.
