Colonial Produce. Print of the Great Exhibition in 1851, showing an exhibit of produce available from British colonies in the Caribbean, with New Zealand and South and Western Australia in the background. One stall has sugar cane, others a variety of fruit. The Great Exhibition, displayed goods and produce from all over the world inside the Crystal Palace. The British Empire then included the colonies made up of parts of Africa, the Caribbean and India and the dominions of Australia and Canada. This print illustrates food grown in the Caribbean such as sugar cane and bananas. A Caribbean woman who is probably looking after the Bahamas stall talks to two children.
