Full image caption

A woman is shown purchasing a wig at Petticoat Lane street market. A row of manequin heads displaying the wigs can be seen in the foreground. Wigs were one of a number of items for sale at the electic market. Other goods included crockery, clothes, household supplies and souvenirs of London.
The street market, which continues today, dates back to the 17th century and is thought to be named after the petticoats on sale there. Located in the Spitalfields areas of the East End, the market continues to sell a range of collectibles and second-hand goods.
