Full image caption

A print of a man entitled, 'The Squire of Alsatia/ Badaux de Londres/ Branaccio di Londra', and numbered 50, from The Cryes of the City of London.
Alsatia was the name given to an area between the Thames and Fleet Street, near The Temple. It had the privilege of legal sanctuary and, inevitably, became a lawless ghetto. Despite his finery and title, the Squire of Alsatia depicted here was probably a well-known swindler and womaniser called ‘Bully’ Dawson.
