The yard and malt tower of Whitbread Brewery, Chiswell Street, E.C. Francis Unwin's detailed print records the architecture of Whitbread Brewery's Malt Tower on Chiswell Street. In the yard, men load barrels onto a waiting horse and cart while sacked malt is unloaded from a second horse-driven cart. Born in Stalbridge, Dorset, Unwin studied at the Winchester School of Art and London's Slade School. He travelled in Holland, France, Italy and Egypt before settling in London in 1909. A wood engraver, lithographer, etcher of architectural subjects and writer, Unwin held his first exhibition the same year he completed this etching. The following year he began suffering from the consumption that eventually killed him.
