Full image caption

Half-size Gauloise amphora. Small amphora in sandy buff Verulamium Region Whiteware. Complete and undamaged, except for a small chip to the rim. Its rim is everted, and chamfered sharply at the top. Its strap handles have a deep central groove. The vessel was made in two parts - body/base and neck/rim - and there is clear evidence on the shoulder of where the two parts were luted together. There are three perforations near base: one circular, the second a subrectangular slot (perhaps cut with a saw), the third larger and more irregular. These must have been made deliberately in antiquity, and although the findspot is not recorded we can speculate this vessel was buried in a grave and had rendered useless as a container before burial.
