Full image caption

Tin-glazed earthenware two-handled vase with thin everted rim and concave base decorated in blue on a white glaze with concentric circles around the neck and foot. The medallion incorporates the Bernardine sacred 'YHS' trigram on a ground of seven or nine dots and is enclosed by a circular band from which fan-like palms radiate in spandrels. The precise function of these decorated vases is uncertain. It has been suggested that the vases could have contained consecrated water or oil, but is equally possible that they had a devotional or talismanic function in an ecclesiastic or domestic context. The vase was made in Italy.
