Full image caption

A wooden utility sideboard.
The donor's parents bought this Utility sideboard when they were newly married in 1946. During World War II furniture was rationed. In 1943 the government introduced the Utility Scheme for Furniture to ensure a supply of good-quality furniture at controlled prices. Catalogues were published with just 20 designs of plain, functional, solidly constructed domestic furniture. As newlyweds, the couple were allowed to purchase the sideboard using ration coupons. The Utility Scheme remained in operation until 21 January 1953.
