These Irish suffragists are at the demonstration on Women's Sunday, held on 21 June 1908, in Hyde Park. Suffragists campaigned for women to have the vote using only non-violent methods. Irish women joined this large protest in London to support English suffragettes. Irish suffragists faced a dual problem. Many of them were also Irish nationalists. If they had been allowed to vote, they would only have been able to elect MPs to an English parliament which was oppressing Ireland. Yet the Irish Party, which was fighting for Irish Home Rule, was opposed to giving women the vote.
