Plays set in the British colonies of the West Indies were popular. This playbill for the Theatre Tottenham Street advertises the programme for Friday 7 May 1830, and includes the popular opera 'Inkle and Yarico' by George Colman the Younger (1762-1836). First performed in 1787, it is set in Barbados and tells the story of Thomas Inkle, an English trader in Barbados, and his love for Yarico, a South American woman who rescues him from death. It was a runaway success and by 1794 had been performed in Dublin, Jamaica, New York, Philadelphia, Calcutta and Boston.
