Full image caption

A tin-glazed earthenware wall tile decorated in blue with a female figure carrying a large tapering container and variant barred ox-head corner motifs. The shape of the vessel is similar to those used by water-carriers depicted in illustrations of early European Street Cries and The Cries of London. Similar vessels were also carried by butter milk sellers This tile has been dated to 1640-60 because it is fractionally thinner than those commonly made a decade or so before.
