Gamaliell Pye (about 1514-1596), Citizen of London and Butcher
Gamaliell Pye came to London from Northamptonshire in search of work and prospects. As Senior Warden of the Butchers' Company he was responsible for London's meat-markets at St Nicholas Shambles, Eastcheap and the Stocks. He also acquired grazing lands in Bermondsey and 'dyvers howses Tenements and Gardens' in Pentecost Lane, near Smithfield. For five years after his death 480 loaves were distributed to the poor parishioners of Christchurch.
