East End men and boys circa 1900. The man reading the Daily Chronicle, a radical daily newspaper, is more smartly dressed than those around him. The premises behind is a billard hall. Bagatelle was a form of bar-billiards popular in the late 19th century and the company Burroughs & Watts made the special tables.
