Full image caption

View of people walking along the High Street in Sutton, 1930s. Women's clothing in the 1920s and 30s was often fur-trimmed or accessorised. This woman wears silver fox, though black and red fox were more common. The whole animal, complete with head, tail and paws, was often worn. 'To be bereft of fox was almost to be naked', commented the contemporary writer J G Links at the time. The unknown photographer who captured this image used a 35-millimetre camera, and produced hundreds of photos of individuals walking along Sutton High Street. The photographer usually waited until the subject became aware of the camera before seizing the portrait.
