The Butifyer. A Touch upon The Times, Plate I. Reply to Hogarth's 'The Times Plate I'. The etching is replete with references to Hogarth, John Stuart Third Earl of Bute and to Pitt. Bute is represented as the big ape accompanied by a Scottish bagpiper to the right of the picture. Hogarth is shown as white-washing the statue of a jack boot on a plinth, which also represents Bute. Sandby was critical of Hogarth's defence of the unpopular Bute, whose ministry was seen as corrupt and under foreign influence.
