Full image caption

Lidded vase of straw opal, flattened ovoid body with raspberry prunts and two lug handles on its shoulder. The vase is raised on a high threaded foot and a cylindrical lid fits over the neck of the vase. It is decorated with raspberry prunts and a finial, probably designed around 1878. The unusual style of this piece, with its eclectic historical references, invites comparison with the group of historical revival straw opal vessels shown at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1878. This vessel has been described as lamp and snuffer. It has also been suggested that it might be a decanter.
