In 1957, the Conservative government passed the highly controversial Rent Act. A 'Repeal the Rent Act' demonstration in September was followed in October by this Labour Party demonstration in Trafalgar Square, with addresses from Harold Wilson. The Rent Act had the power of lifting restrictions on private landlords and the prices they charged tenants for rent. The resulting higher rents led to many protests.
