Watercolour with wash on paper portrait in profile of a black man. The handwritten manuscript on the reverse reads, 'King Ancheigo Reigo [may be Anchiego Reyo or Rego] Gabon River'. There has been a French fort on the estuary of the Gabon, West Africa since 1843. Libreville, named in imitation of Freetown, a settlement for freed slaves was established nearby in 1849.
