Full image caption

View on the Banks of the Sierra Leone in Africa. Engraving. General view of a village, with circular straw-roofed huts, a tree with monkeys, an elephant and a group of black men in the foreground. An idyllic view of Africa featuring a landscape in Sierra Leone, the site of the ill founded colony of Freetown. To a large degree the colony foundered because of idealistic assumptions about the nature of the terrain. Images like this may have fed such assumptions.
