Full image caption

Rooftop view looking east towards Clerkenwell. Buildings and streets extend as far as the eye can see in this view. The parishes north and north-east of the City of London developed rapidly, and all the fields and open spaces here are covered with houses. By 1851, there were over half a million inhabitants living and working north of the City. The artist probably drew this view from the top of William Reid & Co.'s tall brewery buildings in Liquorpond Street. The steeple in the centre of the image is St James Clerkenwell. Pencil and watercolour
