Full image caption

Eight tin-glazed earthenware tiles, in blue, manganese and orange, from a coffee house tile panel. The tiles show part of the interior of a coffee house with a 'pot boy' standing beside a covered table on which are a tankard, coffee bowl, wine bottle, clay pipes and newspaper. The panel incorporates a cartouche with the inscription 'DISH OF COFFEE BOY'. The tiles are decorated in shades of blue, but the pot boy's hair and the heel of his shoe are picked out in a reddish ochre. The one surviving border tile is decorated with foliate scrolling in manganese. The tile sign appears to be unique in employing colour touches to an otherwise blue image.
