Full image caption

Green corded silk woven dress with floral pattern in white and shades of pink, yellow and blue. The fabric can be dated 1729-31, but the style of dressmaking is more likly to be dated 1740-50. There are two white pattern wefts while the other colours are brocaded. The huge floral heads with their tones of colour shading into one another suggest the start of the next era - when three dimensional form not surface texture was important. In this silk we have both an elaborate and subtle texture and the beginnings of a new style in silk design.
