Silk and linen dress, back view. Costume of 18th century style brocade, possibly theatrical with tapes to give pannier effect. Silk woven dress in alternate stripes of green and cream, the brocade has a floral pattern mostly in pink and green. The brocade is probably English and very like the work of the designer James Leman. The robe is open with the usual flat robings at the front and its bodice edges and elbow-length sleeves with falling cuffs. Buff coloured tabby striped in the warp with broad green stripes on which there is a vertical stripe in pink repeated twice with small rosette forms between. On the tabby stripe is a semi-naturalistic flower which alternates in direction and in detail. The pattern is bound in 3 twill by a proportion of the ground warp threads.
