The Caledonian Cattle Market covered 30 acres between Islington and Camden Town, and was a hugely busy and popular place. Evangelist missionaries working for the London City Mission took the word of God to industrial centres and large gatherings such as market places. Armed with a bible, the missionary would try to reach people who might not otherwise enter a church, either through open-air preaching, or in direct communication with individuals.
John Galt was a missionary with the London City Mission and an amateur photographer. This photograph was one of many that he produced to show conditions in the East End and the work of the mission.
