Full image caption

This photograph of missionaries from the London City Mission was taken by John Galt, also a member of the mission and an amateur photographer. Three women stand alongside the missionary Tom Pearson outside the front door of a workers’ home in this East End street. Missionaries like Pearson, who worked with the London City Mission, called door-to-door to visit the poor at home. Galt's wife Frances Jackson was also heavily involved in the mission's work, though at the time women were not accorded the same missionary status as men.
This photograph was one of many Galt produced to show conditions in the East End and the work of the mission. His intention was often to show that, contrary to popular middle-class belief, the people of the East End were worthy of salvation.
