A large gathering of workers from the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, southeast London, listen to the preaching of a London City missionary. The crowd are stood outside the Beresford Gate, the main entrance to the military and naval manufacturing stores that stretched over nearly a mile. In 1902, 17,633 people worked in manufacturing at the Royal Arsenal.
The London City Mission preached in places such as markets and factories to reach large numbers of people with the words of the Bible. John Galt, a missionary with the London City Mission and an amateur photographer, produced this photo to show the work of the mission. He also wrote a small book about open-air preaching, to assist future preachers.
