Full image caption

This photograph of a street scene with horse cabs was taken by John Galt, a missionary with the London City Mission and an amateur photographer. By 1900 there were 11,000 horse cabs on the London roads and in 1902 Galt was appointed special missionary to London cabmen. Evangelical missionaries hoped to spread the word of God and to win converts to the Methodist Church.
This photograph was one of many he produced to show conditions in the East End and the work of the mission, including other photographs showing horse-drawn vehicles, often with their drivers in conversation with a missionary. His intention with his photographs was often to show that, contrary to popular middle-class belief, the people of the East End were worthy of salvation.
