Full image caption

This photograph shows two home-workers, a man and a woman, making shovels by shaping scrap metal in their back yard in Bethnal Green. The photograph was taken by John Galt, an amateur photographer and missionary with the London City Mission. By portraying the family hard at work in the yard, Galt looks beyond their poverty, showing that, contrary to popular middle-class belief, the East End working class deserved salvation and that the London City Mission was working to bring 'the light of God' into their lives.
