Full image caption

A West Indian Sugar Sale. An auctioneer on a rostrum presides over the sale; on the table are samples of the sugar being sold and sheet of paper inscribed: 'Auction/Cork/IDAS/.../Hall Esq.' (suggesting that the sale was held in Cork). A number of the merchants included are obviously portraits and Andrew Barron, first owner of the picture and a partner in a London sugar importing firm, is seen on extreme left.
