Portrait of David Garrick. This painting is in the style of Joseph Wright of Derby. David Garrick (1717-1779), actor, theatrical manager, and playwright, was regarded as one of the greatest actors of the British theatre. Garrick was born in Hereford, a descendant of a French Huguenot family that had settled in England. Between 1742 and 1747 he acted at the three principal British theatres, the Drury Lane Theatre and the Covent Garden in London, and the Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin, Ireland. He usually played opposite the celebrated Margaret Woffington. In 1747 Garrick became co-manager and owner of the Drury Lane theatre.
