Pye television set in wooden case with paraffin filled magnifier. This television set has the portrait of Queen Elizabeth. Early television sets were installed in wooden cabinets. Tabletop models first emerged in the 1940s a result of the shortage of wood in post-war Britain. The firm Pye, one of the UK's leading television manufacturers, developed this television. It has a magnifier attached to the front to enlarge the picture on the screen. Many families bought their first television set to watch the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1952. By the early 1950s there were over 4 million sets in Britain.
