Full image caption

Gaming at Brook's Club, St. James's Street. A group of gentlemen slump despondently around a circular table - perhaps one still at the club but no longer in use. Play has finished and the chairs have been overturned. A dog awaits his owner's departure, and the croupier yawns in his high chair. In the background other members are dining in an alcove. Gaming was a passion for many at the time, with fortunes made and lost in a night at faro or other games of chance at Brooks's, Crockford's and White's. This is one of at least five treatments of the subject by Rowlandson. Ink and watercolour over pencil.
