Printed wool challis dress with detatchable sleeves. By the 1830s the waistline was at a more natural level. This dress, is made from a fabric known as challis, which was woven in Norwich. Challis has a silk warp and wool weft which was fashionable in the 1830s. ('Of all the materials used for Dresses there has not been any in favour so long a time as Chalys.' Townsends Parisian Costumes, 1832) The dress has sleeves which are detachable below the elbow, transforming the dress into a garment suitable for evening wear. Versatility was an important factor in the 19th century when women's wardrobes were of limited size.
