Full image caption

Cotton muslin dress. A dress made of muslin imported to England from India by the East India Company. Indian muslins became highly fashionable towards the end of the eighteenth century and during the early 1800s. Later in the nineteenth century British weavers became better at imitating the fine cottons produced in India, and eventually these could be produced more cheaply. They became more widely available and replaced the Indian-made cottons.
