W.S.P.U. band at The Women's Exhibition 1909. The all-female Women's Social and Political Union drum and fife band attracted great attention when parading through London, led by Drum Major Mary Leigh. It was advertising The Women's Exhibition held at Prince's Skating Rink, Knightsbridge, on 13-26 May 1909. The band prompted the News of The World to report, 'by this latest enterprise the Suffragists have got rid of the last vestige of "mere man" at their demonstrations'.
