Feeding the pigeons in Trafalgar Square. Feeding the pigeons in Trafalgar Square was a traditional tourist activity throughout the 20th century. Birdseed was sold in the square, and thousands of pigeons flocked to eat out of people's hands. The family of one seller, Bernie Rayner, sold birdseed in the square for 50 years. Despite the Trafalgar Square pigeons' popularity, some regarded them as a health hazard.
