Market porter's badge. All licensed market porters working at Billingsgate, London's largest wholesale fish market for centuries, were required to wear a badge. Porters began their working day at 5am, moving crates of fish to and from delivery vehicles and around the trading floor. Both the wholesalers and buyers, from whom they received 'bobbin money', paid them. From 1879 the market was in Lower Thames Street; in 1982 it moved to a modern, larger site on the Isle of Dogs.
