Ceramic suffragette handbell. Ceramic bell with the head of a woman on the top and the inscription SUFFRAGETTE incised on it. This handbell is dated c1909. The militant suffragette campaign was fought against the backdrop of a male-dominated Edwardian society. As the suffrage campaign became a major public issue, commercially produced novelty ornaments often caricatured suffragettes as being unfeminine and 'haggardly'. Pottery manufacturers of the time, produced ceramics satirising the movement. This earthenware bell shows an impression of a suffragette as an 'old crone'.
