This is a photograph of Neath Place, one of the slum streets in the East End and was taken by John Galt, a London City Missionary and amateur photographer. Galt’s contemporary Charles Booth described Neath Place as 'worse than Percival Street', around the corner. The photograph includes a costermonger's cart as an indication that the residents worked hard. Galt chose not to focus on the deprived living conditions inside the homes. His intention with his photography was often to show that, contrary to popular middle-class belief, the people of the East End were worthy of salvation.
