Full image caption

Portrait of Nellie Alma Martel (c.1855-1940). Nellie Alma Martel emigrated to Australia as a child and later campaigned there for women's suffrage. In 1904 she returned to England with her husband, who was ill. From 1905, she became a speaker and organizer for the Women's Social and Political Union, and was imprisoned for protesting in the Lobby of the House of Commons. By 1908 she no longer seems to have been on good terms with the WSPU and in 1910 she subscribed to the New Constitutional Society for Women's Suffrage.
