Full image caption

A crimson silk velvet pistol pistol holster or horse trapping, faced with deep pink glazed linen with an open ended leather pocket attached at the back. This is accessed through a 165 mm wide opening in the front of the holster the edges of which are bound with silver gilt lace. A short length of linen thread has been roughly stitched to the centre back above the leather pocket. A short leather strap has been attached at the centre back below the pocket; one end of the strap has been rolled to form a toggle and the other end cut to create a button hole. The holster is richly embroidered on the front with silver gilt metal thread in a variety of techniques including couched work, guipure and gaufrure embroidery to create a pattern of stylised buds, flowers and foliage. Some of the motifs are outlined with cordons. The holster is edged with a fringe of silver gilt metal thread which is 80 mm deep including the heading.
