This a compositional study for a Bacon's large oil painting 'The Coronation Ceremony of His Most Gracious Majesty King George V in Westminster Abbey. 22nd June 1911'. The view is from Presbytery looking into the South Transept, which was used for the Royal Gallery, and shows tiers of benches constructed for the ceremony. The Coronation Chair is seen on the right of the composition and on the left are Chairs of Estate upon which the King and Queen sat before the ceremony began. A painter of genre, historical and biblical subjects, Bacon exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1889 and was elected an Associate of the Academy in 1903.
