Tower Bridge open to allow a tug and boat to pass through. Tower Bridge was designed by Horace Jones and John Wolfe Barry and it took 8 years to build. When it opened to the public in 1889 it was the largest bascule bridge in existence. Many pedestrians preferred to wait for the bridge to raise and then lower rather than climb the stairs in the tower to cross the high walkway and so in 1910 the walkway was closed due to lack of use.
