Demonstration placard of stiffened linen with wooden strengthening bars top and bottom. Painted in red & black with the caption 'Buckingham Palace has 200 rooms 30,000 basement rooms in London are unfit to live in'.
The placard was carried in a march organised by the Communist led National Unemployed Workers Movement against the Unemployment Act of 1934. The act established a new system for administering unemployment benefit but contained several controversial measures, including compulsory training in labour camps. 1934 and 1935 saw many national demonstrations against the act. The campaign coincided with the celebrations for King George V's silver jubilee in 1935. This placard is one of a series contrasting the wealth of the royal family with the poverty of the unemployed.
